Good behaviour in the light of temptation is much to be admired in any young puppy, - and this one is a fine example. The reward will come with patience. Warmth from the glowing fire, and providing tea with fruit cake for faithful friends is perhaps the most memorable of snapshots in a small child's life. As we grow older, the delights of such a comfortable and ordered scene also conjure up the dramatic moments that follow if the dolls get their tea first! But no, any sensible mother will have fed the dog first out in the scullery, or else its proximity to the cake in this picture may be much closer. Now it is only a matter of a tidbit that counts for our young puppy. He has seen this before and knows that the next item on the agenda is bed-time for the dolls. They will soon be washed and placed in the pram ready for sleeping. They might even have a quick lesson first from their attentive provider. Perhaps just out of sight is an ABC spelling chart and one or two of her other friends, - a cuddly Teddy Bear and maybe some peg dolls all waiting for a share of her attention. Will she give them tea too? She has already accumulated a large circle of miniature followers who can be very demanding. Ah well! as long as they do exactly as they are told, everyone will sleep well tonight. Her little sock has come off and her shoe is nowhere to be seen here. Perhaps mummy has already told our small friend that it'll soon be bedtime for her too, - so she made a start in the long process! At least here is a small demonstration of her obedience and soon the other shoe and sock will follow suite. This beautiful picture is one of the finest examples of Victorian craftsmanship. The composition, the details and atmosphere all captured on one small piece of canvas to enchant the beholder. And that it truly does.
