The extraordinary Ikat and complex supplemental weft weave hinggi (man's garment worn over the shoulder) dates to about 1970's and was purchased by me from the maker while in Sumba Indonesia. The items I am selling were all part of my personal collection. The dyes are all natural and piece is handwoven on a back strap loom.

Size: 88" x 24 1/2" not counting the fringe.

Fringe adds 5" at each end of the piece

This piece consists of 1 continuous panel woven on a backstrap loom. The ikat and complicated supplemental weft weaving were done simultaneously which is extremely difficult. On the front side of the garment dye was painted in certain areas to enhance the patterns. This painting type of application is very typical in Sumba. This is truly an unusual and amazing piece of artistry, skill, and craftsmanship.
