All who have attempted watercolour painting will know the frustration of painting on unstretched paper...even the heaviest papers can cockle and buckle under a wash, causing the paint to flow unevenly and ruining your work. Let's face it...watercolour painting can be difficult enough, so anything which makes it technically easier has to be a bonus. The cure is to pre-stretch your paper. Normally this means soaking the paper and then sticking it to your drawing board with pins or old-fashioned brown-paper tape, both very haphazard methods. Get the paper too wet and it can tear as it dries or even break the board. Get the tape too wet and it it won't stick at all! Furthermore you have to let the paper dry naturally which can take several hours. As a watercolour teacher I needed a reliable device to stretch several sheets a day quickly and effortlessly, hence this invention.
Using the stretcher is very easy.
1 Simply soak the watercolour paper as usual, (This CAN be done by spraying the paper, turning it over then repeatedly spraying the other side, but it is easier to soak it in a bath. Sponging it may damage the surface, however.)
2 Lay it onto the lightweight board, cover the edges with the white plastic strips and lock them into place with the black plastic binders.
You can even apply gentle direct heat to dry the paper, meaning you can be ready to start painting within 10 minutes!

I have used these for several years in the studio and in the field without any failures at all. Many was the time I drove to my next class drying the paper in the footwell of my car! I have sold thousands of these to students who appreciate the ease these give...no licking gumstrip, hammering pins etc. Unlike some stretchers this does not need a hammer or mallet to make the edges secure and is ideally suited to cheaper, lighter weight papers, making a significant saving in material costs. Paper up to 300gsm/140lb can be stretched with ease. As a watercolourist I can assure you that ALL paper should be stretched if you intend to apply heavy washes of colour, and to be stretched properly it MUST be fully soaked.
They come complete with the board and full instructions for use...you supply the paper, paint, water and imagination!
Simple, reliable, lightweight, tidy and elegant in use this stretcher is also highly affordable. It is an absolute essential for all watercolourists. Once you have tried it you will find you will produce far more paintings because the initial chore of paper stretching has gone forever - indeed your problem will soon be picture framing and wall-space!
