ABOUT MATL JEWELRY.

Matilde Poulat was a student at the San Carlos academy of Art, in Mexico City,  when a number of now famous students were there, among them Diego Rivera; her education was based on the usual figure study of the academic schools. She started her professional career as a painter and designer at the time when realism was very important but soon found that imaginative designing was the work she liked the best. For some time she did decorative designing with an occasional chance to do a piece of jewelry, and when jewelry making became such an important craft she began to work entirely in that media. She started to design jewellery on 1934. In 1940 she fully established the Matl workshop.  The Name comes from a conjunction of “Ma” from Matilde and “Atl” means Water in Nahuatl, the most important living Mexican ethnic language.

The effect of the jewellery is rich and precious with designs based on floral and birds forms, cascabeles, and shells. Pre Hispanic Mixtec jewels were the inspiration for many of her pieces, designed with heavy wire, whole surfaces decorated with applied wire designs and with coils and loops on the edges. For color she used coral and turquoise amethyst quartz, amethyst, and topaz, all feminine colors. Her work was always popular with Mexican artists and connoisseurs, even archaeologists praise it as being expressive of the Pre-Hispanic feeling.

After Matilde Poulat died, in 1960, her nephew Ricardo Salas Poulat, who had worked so closely with her, continued the the Matl brand tradition. Even creating some Matl designs himself, which are marked: Matl Salas.

Ricardo Salas Poulat started his artistic work on 1940 assisting his aunt Matilde Poulat.  He kept on working silver with the old techniques. His Daughter Rosalba worked and designed for the Brand since 1980, Mr. Salas and Rosalba  designed jewels and decorative pieces for remarkable artists and characters like Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Maria Felix, Pedro Vargas, Mario Moreno “Cantiflas”, Princess Leticia Ortiz of Spain,  Hillary Clinton, Salma Hayek, and the late Pope John Paul II, among others.

Their work has been exposed on different galleries and museums around the world, such as: Israel Cultural Centre of Mexico, Preciado galleries of Spain, Metropolitan Museum of New York, Rockefeller Museum , Folk Art Museum of Mexico City and Contemporary Art Museums, some university cultural spaces and private collections. His work has appeared on several History Books on Silverware on National and international publishings.

Mr. Ricardo Salas died on October 2005, Leaving his Daughter Rosalba as Head Designer of MATL, whom proudly continued the silversmith tradition. She passed away in 2010. Now the fourth generation of the Poulat-Salas Family is in charge and goes on with this magnificent world wide renowned work. Their most recent exhibition was in Mexico City in 2013 at the Iturbide Palace Museum.
