It functions both as a top layer and as a mid-layer piece, so that you’ll find uses for it from September through May. Essentially, it is a summer-weight jersey with long sleeves and airBlock front panels. The front panels are made from the new stratagonUltra airBlock fabric, which is one of Assos’ thinking fabrics. It is a low-density, two-layer laminated material, which senses your body’s heat and moisture levels, and reacts accordingly. The fabric either allows for greater permeability when you are working hard on a climb (it heats up) or riding with a tail wind into the sun, and then it becomes less permeable to trap heat once you crest that climb or turn back into the head wind (it cools down). The supple stretchiness of the stratagonUltra airBlock fabric also means that they can cut it to be very form-fitting while still being certain that the material will move in tandem with your every gesture.
The side and rear panels are made from the new and improved fabric that Assos is using also on their new Uno_s7 summer jerseys. It is stretchy, form fitting and dries incredibly fast, which will be a big benefit whether you are sweating hard, or just emerging from a short rain shower. The shoulders and upper arms get to luxuriate in a cushy fleecy fabric that both insulates and wick. This is a particular improvement over the earlier iteration of the intermediate jersey and is really what keeps it such a handy item to have once the mercury starts dipping below the 50 degree point. The sleeve cuffs have also been upgraded with the new Assos WristWrap system, which keeps the arms securely in place without bulking it up with excess material.
The front collar has received the upgrade to having airBlock fabric to keep the wind off that all-important neck area. It has a full zip in the front, which is always more practical for those mid-ride potty stops and when you need to ventilate on the go. Three roomy pockets are at the back, including a zippered middle pocket so you can safely stow those items you simply can’t risk losing.
