Principles of Purity
In order to deliver herbal medicines of assured purity, Gaia Herbs adhere to a stringent set of principles and rules. These basic tenets are the foundation of the Gaia Principles of Purity—processes and protocols beneficial to both plants and people:
1. Gaia Herbs strive to procure all seeds and plants from sources whose organic methods and plant quality can be verified.
2. Gaia Herbs adhere to strict Certified Organic cultivation practices and meticulous crop monitoring—and require the same of Gaia Herbs Certified Organic Farmers.
3. Gaia Herbs actively promote growing, harvesting, wild crafting, and purchasing practices that protect land ecosystems and enable the indigenous communities that grow and gather for Gaia Herbs to achieve a more sustainable life.
4. For crops that Gaia Herbs do not grow, Gaia Herbs will purchase raw material from forest trade communities, indigenous growers, harvesters, and Validated Partners with a firm conviction to promote social sustainability in local communities and indigenous cultures.
5. Gaia Herbs uphold ethical business practices, both locally and around the world, to expand Gaia Herbs sphere of influence beyond the acreage of Gaia Farm.
Responsible Sourcing
Certified Organic Farmers - Gaia Herbs neighbors in the hills and valleys of Western North Carolina to the rainforests of Indonesia or foothills of the Himalayas, Gaia Herbs Certified Organic Farmers provide Gaia Herbs with nearly 35% of Gaia Herbs raw materials annually – herbs that can only reach their peak when grown in their natural habitat. Many of the relationships Gaia Herbs have with the Certified Organic Farmers are long-term and closely knit. Gaia Herbs reach out and support them with ongoing training and consultation in organic farming methods, while helping to preserve the unique ways of life in their communities by offering fair market prices and promoting culturally sensitive practices.
Land Steward Harvesters - Are a network of ecologically sensitive wild crafters who gather native herbs grown naturally in forests, fields and other wilderness regions. Through these efforts they help supply Gaia Herbs with close to 25% of Gaia Herbs raw materials each year. In the same manner in which Gaia Herbs foster close relationships with our Gaia Herbs Certified Organic Farmers, Gaia Herbs work with Land Steward Harvesters to steward the land from which they harvest their herbs – upholding practices that maintain and protect these habitats for both the plants and the people who harvest them.
Validated Partners - In instances where Gaia Herbs does not have direct relationships with local harvesters or growers for certain herbs, Gaia Herbs trusted wholesalers and brokers with connections to farmers and wild crafters around the world, help supply Gaia Herbs with nearly 15% of Gaia Herbs each year. These partners and the individuals they represent, are asked to follow organic and sustainable cultivation methods, which Gaia Herbs validate through site visits and analytical testing of the raw materials themselves. In the interest of social responsibility, Gaia Herbs also seek partnerships with brokers and dealers who have their own ethical practices in place, such as diverting profits back into indigenous communities for food, educational, cultural, infrastructure, and environmental programs.
Purity Testing
Purity isn’t just about quality—it’s also about commitment. The plants used in Gaia Herbs herbal extracts must meet or exceed Gaia Herbs exacting standards for purity. Crops are harvested at the peak of bioactivity, and relevant parts—such as seeds, flowers, leaves, stems, tubers, or rhizomes must be delivered to Gaia Herbs laboratory whole and intact in order to ensure that key bioactive constituents are preserved, and that species validation can be verified in every shipment.
Every batch of raw materials is quarantined upon arrival at Gaia Herbs processing facility until Gaia plant biologist personally inspects and analyzes each batch to confirm its identity and that the plants have not been damaged during cultivation or shipping. Beyond visual and tactile inspection, tests are also conducted to ensure the absence of heavy metal toxicity, pesticides, and other chemical contaminants, as well as salmonella, E. coli, mold, yeast, and other microbial contaminants. This is also the point where the first round of analytical testing is used to verify the levels of bioactive constituents. If any batch of raw material fails to meet Gaia Herbs standards, it is immediately destroyed or discarded.
Integrity
Gaia Herbs must ensure the fullest possible expression of each herb. In creating herbal medicines, Gaia Herbs ensure the fullest possible expression of each herb. As herbal ingredients move through the production process, Gaia Herbs are committed to using the right extraction technology and ideal concentration methods to act in accordance with the physical properties of the herb. With every herb that Gaia Herbs process in our GMP compliant facility Gaia Herbs apply ONLY Full Spectrum processing technology. Gaia Herbs full spectrum processing involves choosing the ideal extraction and concentration methods to maintain the integrity of each individual plant. Gaia Herbs do not isolate or purify a single active plant compound all on its own, nor are chemical or synthetic compounds ever added to our extracts. Instead, Gaia Herbs deliver the complete natural array of the plant’s compounds as intended by Nature, in order to facilitate the optimal physiological cascade of benefits within the body. Full Spectrum Processing
Gaia Herbs full-spectrum processing involves choosing the ideal extraction and concentration methods to maintain the integrity of each individual plant. Gaia Herbs right + right method of extraction—the right solution for the right herb—uses a unique ratio of pure grain alcohol to water, supercritical CO2, or a combination of both to extract each plant’s specific chemical blueprint. The extract is then highly concentrated with Gaia Herbs meticulous low + low method of concentration—low temperature in combination with low atmospheric pressure—to protect the fragile, subtle vital forces of each plant.
Right + Right Method
The structure and nature of every plant is unique. To preserve the integrity of these chemical constituents during extraction, Gaia Herbs must choose the right method for the right herb, every time. For some herbs, the bioactive constituents are water-soluble, and can be extracted by dissolving them in water, like making tea. For others Gaia Herbs use organic hydroethanolic extraction that utilizes water in combination with pure, food-grade grain alcohol, carefully adjusting alcohol and water ratios to capture the plant’s bioactive constituents while preserving the full chemical spectrum the plant has to offer. When delivering a medicinal benefit requires capturing the fat-soluble constituents of an herb, Gaia Herbs use herbs extracted by a supercritical extraction technique.
Low + Low Method
Once the bioactive constituents of the herbs have been extracted, the extracts are then highly concentrated with Gaia Herbs meticulous low + low method—low temperature in combination with low atmospheric pressure—to protect the fragile, subtle vital forces of each plant. Preserving the full chemical makeup of what Gaia Herbs worked so hard to capture requires a slow, careful concentration technique involving low temperature and low atmospheric pressure. Our Gaia Herbs low + low method of concentration uses a low atmospheric pressure of 24 millibars (versus the Earth’s standard sea level pressure of 1,013.25 millibars) that allows the water and alcohol to evaporate slowly (much more slowly than other conventional concentration methods), while a low temperature of 60°C (140°F, nearly 75° below water’s boiling point of 212°F/100°C) prevents any volatile, subtle, natural compounds from being damaged. As it evaporates, the organic grain alcohol is recaptured and purified, creating a closed-loop system in which no alcohol evaporates into the environment.•
Right + Right Method
At every stage in Gaia Herbs production process, Gaia Herbs apply exacting testing methods. The result of this uncompromising system of validation is a verification of the integrity of every batch of medicines produced—along with the assurance that these products will deliver optimal potency and wellness. In addition to utilizing Gaia Herbs right + right method of extraction and low + low method of concentration to preserve the full spectrum of bioactive constituents in each herb, Gaia Herbs also verify integrity and concentration levels of our extracts as they move through the production process. This testing includes analytical, identity, and stability validations, as well as the verification of the absence of heavy metals, pesticides, or microbial contaminants. Repeated quantitative and qualitative analyses—employing state-of-the-art scientific techniques like High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC)—also ensure that we have achieved our intended outcomes.
Potency - The result of an unwavering commitment to purity and integrity. Plant Intelligence is Nature’s way of delivering vitality to people. This is true potency. But potency can only be assured when we maintain the herb’s entire chain of custody in order to guarantee that the highest levels of purity and integrity have been preserved.
High Concentration - Gaia Herbs products not only contain Plant Intelligence in its “whole” and original form, Gaia Herbs also gently concentrate extracts without destroying the chemical blueprint of the original herb—and the result is a much higher concentration of herbal medicine per dose in both Gaia Herbs Liquid Phyto-Caps and Liquid Extracts.
Effective Formulation - The effective formulation of potent herbal remedies is based on two key principles: The first is knowing the herbs, their unique chemistry, and their special healing potential. The second is understanding the benefits a person is seeking and the context in which this need occurs—whether it’s a desire for enhanced personal wellness or the need to treat a sudden-onset or chronic condition.
