This drum represents Yamaha's premium Sakae era design and innovation. The YD 9000 series is the original (first) edition of what would become Yamaha's Recording Custom. (*See below or visit Yamaha Drums' website for their Recording Custom history page.) Top of the line through and through. 

The item presented here was used primarily in a climate controlled working studio. But, it was occasionally taken out on gigs. It's in very good used vintage-condition. All original - except batter head. The chrome and high gloss black wrap still gleam. However, due to decades of existence/use there are micro-scratches, scuffs, smudges, fingerprints, marks etc...on the wrap. Still, it's reflective and tight. The chrome has some micro-pitting in spots, micro-scratches & tiny dings. Steel parts have some mild weathering. See pictures. Again, this is used and decades old.

The original coated resonant logo head has lots of marks and scratches. For recording purposes, a hole was cut in the middle. It's crude/uneven. An "O" ring was added to maintain the head's integrity. See picture. The Remo Clear Powestroke 3 head is used. It has marks, a couple small dents and tape residue. The steel hoops have a few mild spots of weathering on the inside. The inlays are tight. See pictures.

Lastly, the spurs, claws, T-rods and mount are fine and function perfectly. All good. All original. Same goes for the inner-shell and edges. Outstanding vintage wood. See pictures. 

That said, if you're not finicky, you get a premium vintage instrument rarely found. Not to mention, a prized piece of Yamaha drum manufacturing history - especially the 18" kick. This drum is complete, original (less batter head), fully functional and free of defects. It just needs a thorough detailing/cleaning/buffing, if a like-new look is desired. Again, this is vintage. But, it was used by thoughtful professionals, is all. See pictures.

The design featured the “YD-shape” separate lug even with YD9000 name. This lug was spring less.
