This set of 4 First Supersonic Flight stamps were issued in 1997, This stamp pictures an X1 aircraft, the first plane to fly faster than the speed of sound. Air Force Captain “Chuck” Yeager was at the controls. The first day ceremony for the stamp, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the flight, took place at the Air Force Base where the historic event happened.

The youngest branch of the U.S. armed forces, the Air Force was originally developed as an aeronautical division of the Army Signal Corps in 1907. The following year the Army purchased its first plane, and in 1911 Congress appropriated funds for aviation. Control passed to the aviation division in 1914.

The allies responded by setting up a series of airlifts to deliver food and supplies. The Soviets ended the blockade in May,1949.
