History
The name of the icon associated with going back to the IV century stories of the miraculous forgiveness steward Theophilus Adana through his prayers to the Mother of God, to whom he addressed as "Perishing" before Her icon. The story of Theophilus became known in Russia since the XVII century, and in the next century became famous miraculous image of Our Lady of the few who received the name of "Perishing".

The earliest of the Russian image of the Blessed Virgin with this title can be regarded as the image that once was in the St. George temple city Bolkhov Oryol province, written, according to legend, in 1707. Icon became famous later, in the middle of the XVIII century, through a miraculous escape from death of the pious peasant village Bor Kaluga province Theodotos Obukhov. One day, the day of Epiphany, on the way from the farmer caught Bolhova terrible snowstorm with strong frost. Having lost the way, the horses stopped at the ravine. Obukhov chilled from the cold and, not seeing means to salvation, unharnessed the horse and tied to the sledge; he wrapped himself up, lay down in the sleigh and fell asleep, knowing that just freezes. In these terrible moments, he turned to the Mother of God with the prayer of salvation, and vowed to order the list with the icon "Perishing", located in the St. George Temple in Bolkhov. Cardiac his prayer was heard: in the neighboring village under the window a peasant suddenly there was a voice: "Take!" The farmer came out and saw his half-frozen in the sleigh another Theodotus Obukhov.
On recovery Theodotos Obukhov immediately fulfilled his vow, ordered list of icons "Perishing" for his parish church. In memory of his salvation on the eve of the Epiphany, he asked to portray the icons at the top of the plot of the Epiphany in the Jordan. Soon, thanks to generous donations from admirers icons in place of the rural poor of the temple was built a beautiful stone church. Bor icon "Perishing" glorified by many grace with signs and wonders. So, in 1871 in the nearby town of Serpukhov raging cholera epidemic, which ceased after the city brought the miraculous icon. Since the icon of Our Lady of the annual solemn procession brought from the village of Bor in Serpukhov. This custom was kept up until the Bor temple was not destroyed. Holy Theotokos then disappeared without a trace.
So far survived several old lists icons of the Mother of God "Perishing". The most famous of them are in Moscow - in the temple of the Resurrection at Assumption Ravine, in St. Petersburg - in Holy Virgin Protection Church in Marienburg, in Samara - in the Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral. There are also lists with the miraculous icon of "Perishing": from the village Malizhina Kharkov province, revealed in 1770, three times to get rid of the inhabitants of cholera; from the village of Red Chernigov province, from Voronezh, as well as from the city of Kozlov (now - Michurinsk). In 1835 at the Moscow Institute of Orphaned Alexander was consecrated a temple in honor of "Seeking the Lost"; later in honor of the shrine, many other churches were consecrated.
Of particular interest are the surviving traditions of the icon Mother of God "Perishing", located in the temple of the Resurrection in Moscow.
