Iittala Finland Alvar Aalto Savoy Vase Clear 120 mm Signed

Designed in 1936 by Alvar Aalto.  Vase was displayed for the 1937 World's Fair in Paris. The design was inspired by the dress of a Sami woman. He humorously called it first as the Eskimo woman's leather breech. Same year these vases were chosen for Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki and the vase came to be known as Savoy vase.

The casting molds were first made of wood, into which the forms were blown. This technology continued until 1954, when wooden molds were replaced by cast-iron ones.

This vase is an earlier one, mouth-blown into iron mold. It has 3 seams at corners, which newer ones do not have anymore. See the last picture.

The vase is actually 4.5" (11.5 cm) tall and 6" (15 cm) at the widest point

Excellent condition, no chips or cracks. Has a couple of minor scratches. Alvar Aalto etching on the bottom.
