This is an authentic, vintage (NOT a modern reprint) circa 1939 full color photogravure print from an image by the internationally renown German naturist photographer Kurt Reichert
. Finephoto is pleased to have acquired a rare collection of full color photogravure plates from 1939 which represent the very first color outdoor nude studies to be produced in pre WWII Germany. During the 1930's color photography was in its infancy and due to the labor intensive process and cost, was seldom utilized - except for special projects. This piece is a rare full color nude study from the time period by one of the most renown photographers of the genre, uncommon not only for it's full color photogravure process, but also because the pubic hair of the model is not blended out as were many of the images from 1930's Germany due to censorship pressure. The "liberation" of this piece from censorship was due to the naturist, fitness lifestyle the composition/subject suggests - which was approved of by the government. In the late 1930's the Nazi regime both encouraged and promoted the idea of outdoor health, fitness and vitality along with the unashamed display of the naked body.

In 1930's Germany, beautiful outdoor naturist images depicting men, women and children, basking in the sunshine, playing and exercising in "the great outdoors", were promoted as a national symbol of fitness, beauty and healthy family living. Kurt Reichert, along with
Gerhard Riebicke and some other select German photographers/photographic studios (see our other Ebay store listings) received government approval in producing these outdoor nude studies. Reichert, known for a strong sense of aesthetics, tended to use physically fit "naturists" in his images including athletes, dancers and gymnasts.

Beautiful in its color palette, the uniquely rich pastel hues of this vintage print are a result of early (1930's) color process and films - in this case Agfa Corp. materials which Reichert liked to use for his color work. Photographically and culturally, t
his early color piece has historical significance on several levels. Whether you collect photogravure prints, vintage photography, or are simply looking for extraordinary home or business decor, this engaging photogravure print will mat, frame and display beautifully!

Note: vintage color photogravures are difficult to scan accurately - our scan above does not do justice to the actual print which is much smoother with fine color graduations which our scanners simply cannot convey.

This vintage color photogravure print is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered and certified serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb", uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE:  Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
