1948 College All-Star Basketball Classic Lakers Beat College All-Stars program

Anderson Packers defeat New York Renaissance Rens – How

The 1948 All-Star Classic was still a highlight of the early basketball season.  The All-Stars were coached by HOF’er – Dutch Lonborg and were slaughtered by the Pros (the Minneapolis Lakers) by a score of 60-42 in a sell-out game.  The Lakers had won the World Tournament, the previous March.  Amazingly, the game wasn’t closer as a number of the players on the College All-Stars roster were already pros.  The College All-Stars featured players such as Walt Budko, Gene Berce, Alex Hannum, Arnie Ferrin, Dolph Schayes, Kenny Rollins, Whitey Kachan, Jack Burmaster, Odie Spears, and George’s little brother – Ed Mikan.

They were dominated by the Minneapolis Lakers whose roster included: Herm Schaefer, Mike Bloom, Don Smith, Tony Jaros, Don Carlson, John Jorgensen, Jim Pollard, Jack Dwan, and Big George Mikan.

Mikan led the game with 18 points even though he left the game in the 4th period.  This was the biggest margin of defeat ever in the All-Star classic.  Arnie Ferrin (eventual HOF’er) was selected as the All-Stars most valuable player.

Fortunately, the preliminary game proved to be a much more exciting contest.  The All African-American basketball team – the NEW YORK RENS were back to play the Anderson Duffey Packers of the NBL.  The game was close throughout the entire play.  Led by Anderson’s – Howie Schultz’s 18 points, the Packers won 66-63.

The Rens roster featured Duke Cumberland, Dolly King, Pop Gates, and George Crowe who is probably better known for playing for the Cincinnati Reds.  The Anderson Packers featured Howie Schultz, Milo Komenich, Frank Brian, Frank Gates, and Bill Closs.

Super Rare program (usually it’s the World Tournament programs that show up in the hobby) with tight binding, all pages intact, slight creasing on the upper right hand corner of the cover.  Pretty close to EX condition or better. Lots of articles, stats, some photos, 48 pages, no writing, a historian’s dream!
