A

NEW ALICE

IN THE OLD

WONDERLAND

  * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *

This auction is for an original 1895 FIRST EDITION of "A NEW ALICE IN THE OLD WONDERLAND" by Anna M. Richards, published by J. B. Lippincott Company of Philadelphia.

This book will delight any reader thirsting for a "New Adventure" in Carroll's wondrous world.

If you've ever heard of the expression: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," that often applies to most things. Take the classic "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll - who would dare try to touch that phenomenal book?

Published thirty years after the initial publication of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," Anna Matlack Richards' "A New Alice in the Old Wonderland" is a splendid and worthy successor to Lewis Carroll's original tales.

This story concerns Alice Lee, an American girl with a coincidental name, visiting Wonderland and meeting all the characters she has read about in the original Alice book.

You are invited to share this journey with Alice Lee, who visits the DUCHESS AND HER HOUSE, THE TEA TABLE, HUMPTY DUMPTY, THE TWEEDLES, the RED QUEEN and so much more.

The book features 67 drawings, RICHLY ILLUSTRATED in the style of John Tenniel which were drawn by the author's daughter, artist Anna Richards Brewster, who is credited as "Anna M. Richards, Jr."

This novel, is one of the more important "Alice imitations," or novels inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice books according to Carolyn Sigler who currently is an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she teaches classes in Victorian literature and culture and children's literature. Her research focuses on the process and theory of literary adaptation, and particularly on works that represent and adapt the powerful mythoi which have circulated around Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the authorship and historical identity of Lewis Carroll.

Of course, when an originally successful piece of art is followed by another imitation, conflicts will arise. In her research, Ms. Sigler has noted: "While Carroll's feelings about such "Alice type" books were conflicted, ranging from interest to outrage (he later considered a lawsuit against American author Anna Richards over her unauthorized sequel to the Alice books, A New Alice in the Old Wonderland [1895]), curiosity seems to have predominated."

The preface offers a cute rhyme, as I'm sure Ms. Richards' was ready to face any and all criticisms for undertaking such a taboo classic.

Despite any stigmatisms associated with the past, this book is a delightful story, along with its illustrations, and will amuse both, young and "young at heart" with its story line, characters and charming twists of its own.
