Sears along with Wards, JC Penny's, K-mart & other store's were allowed to market the SMITH CORONA under their own store's name. ONLY Difference is cosmetically the case & covers are sometimes, but not always, slightly different. And of course they got to put their own name & model on those units.  Sears had the most models & sold all the SCM's with the "Tower" name. This was a brilliant marketing idea & business plan by Smith Corona. SCM actually made the different case's & covers for sears too.

Smith Corona has made this model since the 1930's. It has been marketed/sold under Sterling, Standard, Classic, Galaxy & probably 100 other titles. Probably the most prolific model portable ever ! SCM even made this SAME model into an electric machine in the 60's & sold 1000's. In the 70's they went as far as making this SAME model into the "Coronamatic" & also the Office/commercial grade Smith Corona 8000, that's how bullet proof of a design they have !

We acquired this from an antique shop. Not the best place to buy machines because they charge too much, but we bundled it with some other stuff & since it was a "script writer" and just dirty & looked to be unmolested, it was a perfect potential restoration machine ! It was not too dirty, but sticky & rubber stops were melted goo. Normal for this scenario & the kind we like  because we can make the machine work like new with our knowledge. Plus you have a very low mileage vintage classic typewriter when done.
