ORIGINAL ETIENNE DRIAN (1885-1961) 'WOMAN IN A DRESS WITH PARTIAL NUDITY' HAND COLORED ETCHING
This is just a great original piece. I have had many works by artists doing similar works including Louis Icart, George Tobin and others but this is the first one I have had by Drian. For those not familiar with the artist, I have listed his biography below. I have searched the internet and I cannot find another one of this particular image. A large etching with the image measuring 17 1/4 x 14 inches on sheet measuring 25 x 20 1/2 inches. Signed in pencil lower right and numbered 55/100 lower left. A beautiful view of a woman in a dress with just her right breast starting to be exposed. There is some very faint delicate hand coloring including her lips and her nipple. Really a stunning art deco image. The print has been laid down on a cardboard backing. There are a few spots within the image but outside the woman. The margins show some discoloration and a few toning spots. All in all a very good example that could be a great example with some minor restoration. Print is unframed.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from a website that sells his print work reads: "Painter of figures, portraits, still-life, theater sets, watercolorist, draughtsman, illustrator. Etienne Adriene Driane contributed to several journals, such as “La Gazette du Bon Ton” (The Journal of Good Taste) before 1914 and later “Femina, L’Illustration” (Flirt). He illustrated numerous books, including Perrault’s “Les Contes” (Stories), novels by Jean Lorrain and Henri Regnier, and the works of Sacha Guitry. Essentially a painter of women" more specifically of the Parisian woman- he published “Les Rancaises pendant la guerre “(Frenchwomen During the War). He frequently represented his friend, Cecil Sorel, in elegant poses, and designed costumes and sets for the spectacle of the Casino of Paris in 1933."
