 The Erie 400

...one of the most plush and luxurious private
rail cars ever constructed!

In October, 1924, J. Pierpont Morgan, Jr. ordered a private railway car from the Pullman Palace Car Company. This masterpiece of railcar craftsmanship was completed in May of 1925 and it was named ERIE 400. The elegant private car is 85’ long and boasts an open platform, an observation room, four large bedroom suites, private baths, a dining room, full kitchen and crew quarters.

The Erie 400 was truly a fitting rolling mansion for JP Morgan, Jr. In the mid-1990s the private rail car was completely restored to its original splendor, with modern upgrades including heating, air-conditioning, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. A full custom interior was completed using the finest of imported leathers, woods, velvets, brass and glass.

The car rides on two three-axle wheelsets (trucks) and was rated for 110mph travel on Amtrak passenger trains.

Erie 400 can accommodate up to ten guests in total luxury on overnight trips and up to twenty-four on day excursions.

The exclusive feature of the Erie 400 is the open-air rear platform with a gleaming brass rail. This is the ideal vantage point to take in the passing vistas, mountains, rivers, lakes and farmlands.

The Erie 400 is truly one of the most incredible private railroad cars ever built and remains a one-of-a-kind piece of American rail car history.

Today the Erie 400 is in need of extensive restoration, especially if you wish to return the car to 110mph rated travel on Amtrak. However, the timeless elegance of the Erie 400 remains intact as you can tell from these images.

The smart investor will soon realize that the potential return on investment from this unique part of American history is likely to be substantial. Nearly all other important American rail cars are in museums or in storage, unable to continue travel on the current rail system.

The Erie 400 is currently for sale. Please submit all inquiries HERE.

Disclosure: I am auctioning the Erie 400 on behalf of my client, the owner of the rail car. All questions and negotiations must be directed and conducted through me.

Ownership transfer procedures will be conducted with the owner.

Payment will be submitted via wire transfer ONLY according to my specific instructions.
