Vintage Mid Century Original OIL PAINTING of CHRIST Carrying the Cross to Calvary, after a Renaissance masterpiece in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts MA, credited to the circle of Bellini.

Christ wears the crown of thorns and carries the heavy, grained wooden cross on his right shoulder as he gazes with stoic sadness at the viewer. A single tear leaves his eye.

His expression is true, and the rich, deep shadows are beautifully modeled, as is the heavy cross. The drapery of the robe is handled with sensitivity.  The artist has put a great deal of passion and faith into the expression of this  work.

The original work that inspired this painting is at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and dates to 1505-1510.  Originally thought to be by Giorgione, it was later attributed to another of the pupils in Bellini's circle.  It was in turn inspired by a painting of Bellini's, now lost.

Beautifully done oil on artist board painting in a varnished gilt wood frame. Signed by the artist lower right, and dated on the back "May 1951".

Painting is 9" x 12", framed size 12" x 15".  Unglazed.

Some light surface grime and concave curvature of the panel.  Otherwise in very nice vintage condition.

A wonderful painting for your home collection, or a superb gift.
