Taste: A very exotic Asian spice taste... Very .. unusual..

Size: 2-5 inch peppers

Traits: The Blood red Dong Xuan belongs to a very old order of tropical peppers. One that bore silent witness to helicopters overhead and strife between nations raising and falling.  A pepper that has sat for a thousand years in the solitude of a steamy jungle hillside somewhere among trees and vines. If this pepper could talk... We love owning these and make habit of growing at least 3 of these a year, mostly for historical nostalgia regarding the Vietnam war. It’s little know but nutrition wise this small unassuming pepper played an unlike part in both food and military history. This plant is truly worth owning and holds a special place of honor in our hearts. To own this is to own a piece of history. To keep these pure we grow these in isolation so you can be assumed this is the genuine article child of Vietnam- unchanged from its parents. – they are NEVER grown form seeds but cloned from cutting to ensure bloodline.

Personal Thoughts:

GOD what a magnificent pepper! I just love a good story behind a shiny item! You know this pepper has the potential to be rather hot? I have to admit I underestimated this pepper at first. I gave some to a friend to make salsa out of before I had a chance to sample these. I figured these looked so plain and the one I had tried was so meh.... But oh man was I wrong. Incidentally give your boss intestinal distress wrong...

Anyway long story short the guy never talked to me again after chewing me out about the pepper I said was "mild."

Also a big thanks to the original artist who very kindly made the picture and allowed me to use it sooooooooooooooo long ago!

Growing Instructions:

Tropical Hot Pepper Rules:

Start indoors in a hot place that stays around 80-85 f degrees. I strongly suggest using or buying a self-watering heated mini greenhouse tray with humidity dome. Use a premium starting soil then mix in with a sprinkle of perlite, powdered cinnamon (as an Anti-fungus) bone-meal (powered) and a scoop of worm castings or potting soil containing worm castings. This insures the maximum performance, good drainage, and growth rate for your plants during their vulnerable stages.

When seedlings appear light them using a shop light or heat lap fixture- use an 80 watt aquarium full spectrum bulb, or any plant rated shop light bulb. Set a light timer for 18 hours (NO MORE THAN) of light- keeping in mind that plants need darkness too. If you have a room where sun gets in use that, as filtered sunlight through glass is always superior to lights.

When seedlings get 2 inches tall replant into a 5 inch deep planter and bury the stem 1 inch into the soil to make more roots and get bigger plants. When 6 inches tall repot in a large pot bury the plant another 2 inches in soil, place plant out into a greenhouse. Begin allowing for direct contact with sun on non hot days 1 hour a day and another hour the next until a month has passed limit (5) hours a day. Then when 1 foot tall plant into garden with good potting soil containing worm castings for rapidly grown superior quality plants with maximum fruit. (Cover during excessive heat and winter cold.)

Mound dirt around stem for better roots. Once the plant reaches 3 feet tall cut off the top tip for a bushier more productive plant.
