Maud Humphrey's Mother Goose

Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York. First edition, 1891. Hardcover. 9 x 11 inches. 24 chromolithograph color plates (all present), printed one side on very heavy, stiff paper. Covers are worn with boards showing through at corners and edges. Text pages have significant age spotting, and the last plate is torn in the upper corner, but does not affect the image. The rear endpaper is also torn as well as heavily stained and smudged. The book was bound with staples, and they are rusted and showing through some pages at the very inside of the gutter.
Each plate contains a nursery rhyme and an ethereal illustration showcasing Humphrey's timeless, angelic children.
Maud Humphrey (1868-1940) was a prolific American illustrator, and the mother of actor Humphrey Bogart.
