Pelé was called to the national team in early 1969, he refused at first, but then accepted and played in six World Cup qualifying matches, scoring six goals. Brazil played Italy in the final at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Pelé scored the opening goal and Brazil won the match 4–1.
The 1970 World Cup in Mexico was to be Pelé's last. Both the Brazilian team that were crowned champions of the 1970 World Cup and the tournament itself have become regarded as among the very finest in the history of the FIFA World Cup. In contrast to the more physical style of play that had dominated the previous two tournaments, the 1970 Finals are noted for the attacking play adopted by most teams. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, referees could issue yellow and red cards yet, in contrast to the previous tournaments (besides the 1950 edition) and all subsequent tournaments to date, no player was expelled from play.
Pele was perhaps the most famous footballer of all time and featured in 4 World Cups,although forced out of the finals in Chile in 1962 through injury.
He won 3 World Cup winners medals with Brazil playing in the successful teams of 1958 in Sweden, at the age of 17, England in 1966, and the famous 1970 team which won the World Cup in Mexico.
