British watchmaker John Harwood invented the self-winding wristwatch in 1922.  After receiving the Swiss patent for the movement in 1924, Harwood licensed the design in 1928 to Blancpain, Fortis, and The Perpetual Watch Co. for sale in North America.  Harwood also set up his own company in Great Britain, but it folded from financial distress during the Great Depression in 1931.  The innovative movement was completely automatic, with no crown, which allowed for improved protection from dust and water.  The time was set by turning the coin-edge bezel.  Very few Harwood automatics were produced, and far fewer still exist today.  Here's a rare all original Harwood automatic with signed original tapestry dial.  Here's the details:  HARWOOD (Automatic) - Signed 29x38mm "Perpetual" chromed snapback case with coin-edge rotating bezel (for setting time) and finely filigreed case top and sides, signed 15 jewel bumper automatic movement (adjusted to two positions), signed original tapestry dial with luminous arabic numerals, blued steel and luminous hands, and porthole automatic winding indicator at 6:00, open link metal bracelet with adjustable clasp.  The chromed snapback case on this piece is signed "Perpetual," making this piece one manufactured for the North American market in the late 1920's.  The case features fine filigree work on the case top and sides, and sports the attractive coin-edge bezel used for setting time.   The signed 15 jewel bumper automatic movement is running and keeping time, but stops after several minutes.  Perhaps I'm just not winding the movement sufficiently prior to wearing the watch, although one of the early complaints about the Harwood automatic was the short running reserve.  The movement is signed, "Harwood , Self Winding Watch Co. Ltd., 15 Jewels, 2 Adj, Patent No106583, Swiss."  The movement is all original with all original parts.  The dial is also original, which is very rare for this already rare watch.  And it is in very good condition, with tapestry texture, luminous arabic numerals and blued steel hands, and porthole automatic winding indicator at 6:00.  The watch is finished on an unusual open link metal bracelet, which very well may be original to the watch.  The bracelet will fit up to about a 7.5 inch wrist.  RARE ALL ORIGINAL EARLY VINTAGE HARWOOD AUTOMATIC WITH ORIGINAL TAPESTRY DIAL AND PERIOD METAL BRACELET!  THE WORLD'S FIRST AUTOMATIC WRISTWATCH!  Buyer pays shipping ($15 US Delivery or $50 International via Global Express). photo 1a871dc4-25ba-44e5-b66d-ba51af1ff028_zpsa05a094e.jpg photo 037d93c0-acf9-47ed-ac41-a19bbb419944_zps581521d4.jpg photo 93476c39-50df-46d7-af56-cb3f86942ae9_zps545645e3.jpg photo 1832cf7c-8044-43dd-af9f-97342c3e4700_zps1befb67a.jpg photo 4219c891-c8cd-44bf-832d-9963ebc73a95_zps4fc9e7d5.jpg photo 930691d5-c54d-4b5c-b405-77937e67f087_zpsf75728dd.jpg
