When Porsche's design studio decides to go after a marketplace, it rarely fails to impress. Such was the case when it released the S mountain bike. The bike pictured here is that model. Suspension forks are upside-down design, delivering a staggering 110 mm of wheel travel.
While the S (for "suspension") is not merely a rebadged bike from a different manufacturer-all were designed at Porsche AG in Weissach, Germany, where a full 20 percent of Porsche's revenue is derived from designing products other than automobiles.
The specifications of these bikes are like those of a Formula One race car. The front suspension is a motorcycle-inspired design of inverted fork tubes rebounding via closed-cell elastomeric springs and coil springs located by Aluminum double-triple clamps. Typical of Porsche style, the company famous for limited-production, hand built, highly responsive, and costly automobiles.
The Porsche bikes are pricey parcels of two-wheel technology designed to get highly skilled riders around, over, or through any obstacle a mountain can muster. Just as German-built Porsche cars showcase fine engineering, exotic materials, and world renowned workmanship, so too these bikes go beyond the everyday mountain biker's expectations.
