This fifth volume in the fresh wood series showcases the finalist and winning pieces from the 2011 Fresh Wood student woodworking competition held at the AWFSFair in Las Vegas, NV. Over forty high school and post secondary students projects are featured in Fresh Wood, professionally photographed by furniture designer/maker Alan Harp. You will see detail shots of amazing joinery, veneering, and carving executed by the students and accompanied by commentary from each of the creators. The projects in fresh wood volume 5 are as unique and creative as the student woodworkers. Some are reproductions and interpretations of famous styles while others are new designs, but all are functional and noteworthy. The projects include musical instruments (acoustic guitar, banjo and drums), gaming tables (poker, table tennis and bumper pool) and a Dali-inspired coffee table. These projects can be inspiring to educators, students, and industry professionals and each project has value that can be extracted as a learning or motivational tool for anyone interested in the woodworking industry. Students discuss challenges during the design and construction processes, such as using new equipment and software, defining proper angles and joints and the complexities of proper finishing.
