BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo (22.5cm), xxiv, 494pp // viii, errata slip, 508pp, index. Original blue Cloth Portrait frontis in each volume, with many other illustrations (see list below). 1st Edition in variant a binding (first issue), Freeman: F1548
CONDITION: VERY GOOD // VERY GOOD. This is a sound, tightly bound set. Volume 1 has some minor staining above title on front board (see photo). Tightly bound. Rear endpaper of VOL I cracked. A few minor pencil marks. Pencil inscription (from 1903) of A presentable set with nice provenance of a title that is usually very worn, and more often than not in brown cloth issued by Watts and Co -(variant b. binding - presumably from remaindered sheets).

Summary
This collection contains almost entirely new matter although some extracts and a few whole letters are also found in Life and letters (1887). It also contains a brief autobiographical piece (pp. 1-5) which is sometimes found in modern editions and translations of his main autobiography. There is only one original printing, but Murray sold some sets of sheets to Watts, and it occurs in the brown cloth of Watts' (variant b binding) as well as this blue Murray binding.
