Antique 1880 Rutherford Hayes Presidential Haviland Limoges Turkey Oyster Plate
This 19th century plate dates circa 1880, is fully marked on the back:
H & Co mark in green,
Fabrique par Haviland d'apres les….. in red,
Multi color eagle,
Design patented August 10th 1880 in blue,
Signed in black by Theo(dore) R. Davis.
Davis was the designer of President Rutherford B. Hayes'oyster plate series. Commissioned for the White House, this pattern by Haviland became notable as an extravagance in its day and was reissued. This 5 well turkey-decorated plate continues to be one of the most sought after oyster plate patterns today.
The colors used are cobalt and lighter blues, seafoam green, muted brown & tan. The wells are painted additionally with lavender. The outer rim is brushed gold, and many gold accents show along the well rims and painted shells. The under rim is also gold accented, as customary for the superlative lines of plates by top manufacturers. It’s a must-have oyster plate for the collector.
Condition: No chips or cracks, and no crazing. No cutlery marks. Scattered gold wear on the underside foot ring. Gold on the face of the plate is in excellent condition. Beautiful overall shine with iridescence.
