This
copy of The Skitter Cat Book was published in 1947 and contains a collected
anthology of the first 3 novels written by Eleanor Youmans : Skitter Cat (first published in 1925); Skitter
Cat and Little Boy (first published in 1926) and Skitter Cat and Major (first published in 1927). All the characters are based on the
author's family, pets and neighbors. The main character in all
the books is a white Persian cat who was named Skitter because of the sound his claws make when he ran across the floor - like
a skittering dry leaf. In the first book
kitten Skitter is adopted by Mother, Father, and Little Boy and joins the other
member of the family, Major, a shaggy, stub-tailed Airedale dog. The second is the story
of Little Boy and Skitter as they spend the summer at a camp in the Rockies with his family and the adventures they
encountered along the way. The third
book is about Skitter and his chum Major, who rescues
Skitter from perils, fights his enemies and is badly injured.
This
hardback edition was published by The Bobbs-Merrill Company and is illustrated with both color
and black-and-white drawings by J. J. Taber.
The book is in relatively good condition, although the front end papers
have the original owner's name in pencil and the back ones have two small,
shiny red "snowflake" stickers and evidence of something else having
been pasted to them. The covers are clean with bright gold lettering, the spine
has a small amount of denting at the top and bottom, and the binding is tight
with no loose pages. The pages are deckle edged and clean with no
marks or writing.
I am not a book seller and have described the book as best I can.
