Works with either double or triple cranksets.
I use these on personal builds, but I have a couple of extra sets, so its time to let them go! I've pretty much standardized on eight speeds for my personal bikes: cassettes and chains are reasonably priced, endless number of component choices (does NOT work with Dura Ace!). Shimano in their infinite wisdom decided that 8 speed Dura Ace should not play well with the rest of their product line. Go figure. I've used this model shifter with Deore, Ultegra, and Shimano 600 SIS components.
Better yet, this model allows you to switch between friction or indexed, so they will work well on the old school 5/6/7 speed stuff (in friction mode). The front shifter is friction only, which I greatly prefer. Front friction allows the rider to trim endlessly. Say good by to FD cage chain rub!
