At least that's what it seemed throughout Southeast Asia during the first 4 years of WW2. During that time, Japan conquered and occupied many countries in Asia, including Burma, Philippines, Malaya (West Malaysia), Oceania, and the Netherland Indies (now Indonesia). Not long before that, Japan had already occupied Mongolia and the better part of China!!
The Imperial Japanese Government printed their own Occupation currency, now called "Japanese Invasion Money" or JIM. The notes were also called "Banana Notes" since many of them depicted banana trees.
Japan even printed currency for countries they planned to invade, such as Mexico and even the U.S. As if to prove a point, all bills for all occupied countries were printed in English!
The propaganda was that Japan was protecting these countries from Western influence, under the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. In reality, the Japanese occupation was often marked with brutal oppression of the people in these countries.
Fast forward to 1945..The once mighty Japanese empire is nothing but rubble..All the conquered countries wanted Japan to pay for what they had done...The affected countries collected all japanese currency,in order make Japan pay up..Japan did,but at pennies to the dollar...Most currency was burned after payment,but I was able to aquire a lot...
