Hand made white acrylic "cottage shawl" with a fringed edging.

This is a used shawl hand-made of the soft white, acrylic yarn which closely resembles wool worsted yarn. It is warm, yet light weight and offers good coverage. It measures 62" from side to side, not including the 6 1/2" fringe, 4" from side to point and 33" from the center back to the bottom point. It may be hand or machine washed on the gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry.

According to Mary Konior's book Crocheted Lace,  copyright 1991, Sterling Publishing House, New York) The Cottage Shawl or Charity Shawl.. "The Cottage Shawl was so common during the mid- and late Victorian periods that it almost merits the status of national dress.  A sturdy outdoor version, often made in a serviceable grey with a scarlet border, was well in evidence in industrial, agricultural and fishing communities in England as a work shawl."  The Cottage or Charity shawl "is of course, a larger version of the small patchwork square known today as the granny square, that is generally used for blankets.  The distinction between a heavy outdoor shawl and a crochet blanket is that traditionally a shawl was med in one piece, and a blanket, being much heavier, was made from an assembly of patches.

Treble-block designs with mitered corner increases were well established by the 1860's, and in 1862 Eleonore Riego, a famous Victorian needlewoman, gave this method for working a shawl corner in La Mode Winter Book."
