Hibachis were traditionally used in Japan from time immemorial up to just after WW2 as a heater in their intensely cold winter. They would not have a charcoal fire inside but would burn just a handful of charcoal on top of a bed of insulating ash. They would often have a tripod over the fire with a tea pot boiling water for tea.      They were used for heat only, not for cooking.
