Description of Contents.  The 1930-40 decade produced perhaps the greatest high performance cars of all time – the Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union Grand Prix cars – and the most enthralling motor racing ever seen on the road-circuits of Europe.  Nevertheless, German motor manufactures had always been building sporting motor cars and were entering them in competition in the late eighteen hundreds, though perhaps the French cars were the more successful at the time.  After the turn of the century, however, the Prince Heinrich and Kaiserpreis Trials greatly assisted in the design and development of German and Austrian sports and racing cars, culminating in their crushing national triumph in the 1914 French Grand Prix at Lyons.  The ‘twenties produced some interesting and delightful machines from Benz, Austro-Daimler, Graf und Stift while, apart from Grand Prix cars, the Maybachs and Horchs, the Adlers and BMW’s of the ‘thirties are spoken of with admiration to this day!  Since the war, we have seen the birth and maturing of the Porsche and, as in all periods of German motoring history, the great Daimler-Benz Company have shown us some cars of shattering high performance such as the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and W196.  Germany has a proud motoring heritage indeed, and this volume presents the complete story, with much fresh material (at time of publication) which has been brought to light by research in contemporary German, Austrian and Czechoslovakian publications used here for the first time in this field.
