LIGHT SEAL REPAIR KIT FOR VINTAGE AND CLASSIC CAMERAS

A selection of nine various types and thickness of light seal and mirror cushion foams each piece being 1½ x 6 inches ( 37 x 150mm) plus 1.5mm diameter cotton string seal  plus adhesive, scrapers and cleaning sticks. All of which have proved  useful in the replacement of camera light seals as can be seen from the feedback.

1. Self adhesive and non adhesive 3mm and 5mm open cell foam which is the standard light seal used by camera manufacturers and is not readily available to the public in small quantities.

2. More dense 1.5mm amd 2mm thick closed cell foams in both self adhesive and non adhesive format which are useful where a slightly firmer material is required for light seal or mirror cushion replacment. These foams are more easily cut into very thin strips.

3.1mm self adhesive felt which is used for light seal on many cameras and in film cassettes.

4. 1m of 1.5mm diameter cotton string for cameras where the film access door is sealed by means of a groove containing this type of material

5. 5ml container of solvent free, water based, non toxic and non flammable adhesive

6. Small glue spreading brush.

7. 10 cotton cleaning sticks and 2 wooden scrapers

8. Pair of tweezers to help position the foam

9. Advice Notes

The light seal on this camera has crumbled away making the camera useless but is easily and cheaply replaced by the open cell foam Various types of closed cell foam are used for the replacment of mirror cushions in many older cameras

Many older cine cameras use foam to hold the film and batteries in place. As can be seen above this quickly rots away, particularly if the batteries are left in the camera for any length of time It is surprising how much light seal some cameras actually require and if any one of these seals fails then the camera is useless, but with the application of the open cell foam seal it can be cheaply restored

It is important to ensure that the film view window seal is intact as this is a common cause of film fogging This shows the deterioration of the foam packing holding the prism in a SLR camera. The sightest touch of the scewdrivermakes the old rotten foam fall away.If this is not replaced the prism will become mis-aligned and rattle.

The shutter and prism seating also require a foam  damper which can rot away after time and will need to be replaced. Certain makes of camera have a special cotton thread seal of about 1.5mm in diameter which runs in a groove around the perimeter of the body. This type of seal is not immediately obvious and  if it deteriorates can cause the film access door to rattle and not close firmly against the body of the camera causing light leakage. This should be used with care and the film door should never be forced shut.
