Charming rustic Quebec folk carved moose lamp by noted carver André Dubé, circa 1930-1970s. Carefully carved out of a single piece of wood the proud moose stands alert with one leg resting on a raised area of ground, behind which a truncated tree forms the pillar for the lamp base. A socket and harp are integrated atop the trunk and hold up the lashed wood slat shade.

The carving is well defined with much character: the tall narrow legs of the moose are gracefully carved; the ears dynamically positioned as if momentarily frozen to catch a sound.

Dimensions (base): 9 ½” long x 7” wide x 18 ¼” high
Dimensions (shade): 9 7/8” high x 14 5/8” diameter
Dimensions (full): 24 ½” high

Condition: It is in Very Good Vintage Condition. The moose is missing antlers, else the lamp is excellent. These can easily be replaced with the help of a good carver from Quebec; likely not costly. Either side of the head can be seen two small holes where the original rack was inserted for stability (see pictures below). The signature is clear and precise. The patina is natural and soft with a rich golden tone, the original hand-crafted lashed wood shade is present and in Excellent condition. The base is felted, with the original felt, to protect your tabletop. It is Ready for Use and Display.

Biography: “Arthur Dube was known for his carvings of the wild animals of Quebec. His subjects ranged from Caribou and moose to Beavers; often putting them on lamp bases with shades made of wood veneers, sewn together. He signed his work usually with a chisel on the base. His work was sold in Galleries around Quebec and he often did commissions for companies and associations. His sculptures were often quite spectacular and very decorative. He carved usually in Basswood and they were never painted but occasionally stained ones are found. … He was a member of a family of accomplished carvers from the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli region of Quebec (on the eastern shore of the St. Lawrence River about an hour northeast of Quebec City) which has been known for its tradition of folk carving since the early 1900s. …  a number of lamps carved in the 1930s-1970s by the Dubé brothers Arthur, Clement and André, most often in the forms of moose, bear, squirrels, deer, rams and dogs.” (Many thanks to Lyle Elder Folk Art & Cherry Gallery!)
