Peterson #76. Brass hilt with wire wrapped shark skin covered grip. 29 5/8" curved broad and narrow fullered s.e. blade of substantial fighting form, undecorated. Blade crisp. Mellow patina to the hilt. Undamaged. This pattern was copied from the French. As with most Civil War officer's swords, it was produced in Germany for purchase by American officers. Officer's swords produced in Germany at the time were virtually always maker marked. The absence of marks is generally considered to indicate that the sword was produced for sale in the South to a Confederate officer. The lack of blade decoration supports that conclusion.
