The LCD is based on the ever popular Hitachi HD44780 parallel interface chipset.

Lots of free code available for just about any micro controller you can think of including the BasicMicro series, this range includes custom LCD control commands and all you have to do is specify the pins you have connected the LCD too and then you can use simple commands to control the LCD such as CLEAR SCREEN, POSITION CURSOR, Display Text and Numbers and even commands to allow custom characters to be created to draw a bar graph or create the Degrees C symbol for example, this allows you to be up and running with the LCD in minuets,
