DOBUTSU SHOGI IN THE GREENWOOD
This is nothing less than the great traditional chess form of Japan, a full set of 40 pieces on a 9 x 9 square playing surface. But where the standard sets show ancient Chinese (Japanese kanji) symbols, this set features delightfully cute little animals with small symbols to remind the player of how each piece moves.
GREAT FOR LEARNING AND GREAT FOR PLAYING
Players new to the game of shogi will find this an especially easy way to start playing the game, but experienced shogi players will also delight in the novel style of pieces.
This game ties in with the simplified game "Let's Catch the Lion." Players familiar with that game will find this a simple and logical step to learning real shogi with disarming, easy to understand characters.
A QUALITY SET
This set is made with quality from start to finish. It comes in a heavy duty cardboard box with a removable lid. The playing surface is a heavy cardboard (as used in many durable board games), 13 x 11 inches (33 x 29 cm). The pieces are wooden blocks, just over 3/4 inch on each side (2 cm), with a printed surface showing each character. Most pieces also have a printed surface on the bottoms, showing each piece's promotional value and its new move.
There is a larger version of this game available, which is a bit more expensive and features a cloth playing mat.
The set offered here is the more recent, less expensive edition. Still the same excellent quality.
