Come non ricordarsi dell'oggetto più
kitsch degli ani '80. L'orologio nero con display ai cristalli liquidi
verdi che si caricava mediante immersione in acqua. Aveva un piccolo
serbatoio nella parte superiore con un minuscolo foro che permetteva
l'ingresso all'acqua, rigorosamente dolce, niente acqua di mare perché
il sale avrebbe corroso i circuiti interni.
Il funzionamento era reso possibile da una reazione elettrochimica che avveniva all'interno della cassa dell'orologio. In pratica due piccoli elettrodi entravano in contatto per mezzo dell'acqua, che funzionava da conduttore di ioni. L'acqua che entrava nel serbatoio andava a rimpiazzare quella vecchia, ormai satura e non più utilizzabile.
Da notare in alto a destra sulla cassa dell'orologio c'era stampata la mascotte di Italia '90, che si chiamava Ciao. L'orologio era stato pensato appunto per essere un gadget dei mondiali di calcio del 1990. Personalmente non so perché un oggetto tanto pregiato sia di punto in bianco sparito dalla circolazione. Anche quelli della mia età se ne sono dimenticati e non ne parlano affatto. Forse come tutti gli oggetti omaggio nelle scatole delle merendine, anche l'acqua watch ha avuto la sua collocazione in un intervallo temporale stretto, nel quale è giusto che rimanga (altrimenti non sarebbe una serie limitata).
La cosa più prodigiosa però rimane il funzionamento. Nonostante all'epoca avessi solo nove anni, mi chiedevo come fosse possibile alimentare un circuito con l'acqua... E soprattutto perché non si poteva usare lo stesso principio ogni altro congegno elettronico. Dai vaghi ricordi di fisica delle superiori e qualcosa dell'università, mi sembra di aver sentito una volta parlare di un prototipo di motore nautico che sfruttava l'elettrolisi dell'acqua per generare energia con un'efficienza spaventosa. Sarebbe il caso di approfondire...
