HMS Prince of Wales was the second battleship built in the King George V class. Together with HMS Hood she was sent to hunt down the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. After the sinking of the Hood on 24.05.1941 the already seriously damaged Prince of Wales fired some salvo's at Bismarck before withdrawing. The Bismark suffered damage to her steering system making her partly un-manoeuvrable. After being transferred to the Far East theatre she was finally attacked and sunk on 10 December 1941 by large formations of Japanese aircraft.

Item Details

Next to the Tirpitz the Bismarck, the flag-ship of the Germany Navy was the largest German warship with a displacement of 50,900 tons and a crew of 2092 men. Put into service on 24.08.1940, she left port on 18.05.1941 for operation Rhine Exercise. Together with the Prinz Eugen she was discovered early by British reconnaissance planes. In the encounter with the Hood on 24.05.1941 the latter was sunk by the Bismarck. After a long chase the Bismarck was hit by an aircraftfired torpedo on 26.05.1941 and intercepted by the British battleships King George V and Rodney. On 27.05.1941 the Bismarck was sunk by her own crew 490 km off the french coast.

Item Details

The Yamato was a Japanese Second World War battleship. Its 460 mm heavy artillery had the largest calibre yet used aboard ship. The ship was built in 1941 at the naval shipyard at Kure and was used in the War in the Pacific. On 7th April 1945 the Yamato was sunk by US carrier-borne aircraft 300 km south of the Japanese island of Kyushu.

After the loss of four large aircraft carriers in Midway, the Japanese decided not to use the third vessel in the Yamato Class as a battleship, but to use the hull for an aircraft carrier. As the 20 cm thick armoured deck was already laid, it was only possible to set up a hangar deck for 18 to 47 aircraft. The Shinano was never used - as she was being taken to the Kure shipyard for completion she was sunk by the American submarine Archerfish.

The nuclear powered USS Nimitz has been in service with the US Navy since 1975. Together with nine other aircraft carriers in this class, the Nimitz is one of the largest warships ever built.
