Portrait of a Young Lady

By Raymond Balze (1818-1909) - One of Ingres's Closest Students

A lovely, fine antique late 19th Century oil on canvas painting which depicts a portrait of a young lady with a blue dress, black and blue necklace and and a purple flower hairpiece by the listed French artist Raymond Balze (1818-1909).

JEAN PAUL STEPHEN BALZE (Rome 1815, Paris 1884) and JEAN ANTOINE RAYMOND BALZE (Rome 1818, Paris 1909), where two brothers, and were among the closest student of Ingres, because their father Joseph Balze (1781-1847), Lord Chamberlain and friend of King Charles IV of Spain, helped the painter in trouble after fall of the Empire to find work. Paul returned to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1831 and Raymond in 1832.

The artist exhibits superb attention to detail which is inclusive of the lace, facial features (please see the dot of light to the eye) and other clothing accessories. The portrait is painted with a light palette capturing the skin tones very well as well. A very charming portrait.
