NO RESERVE. 1/43 Golden Arrow driven by Major Henry Seagrave at Daytona Beach, Florida on March 11, 1929 to set a new World Land Speed Record (LSR) for the flying mile of 231.45 mph. Resin model. Bizarre Model #B1008. MIB.

The Golden Arrow was built for the Seagrave with the specific goal of retaking the LSR for England from the American Ray Keech who had set it on April 22, 1928 with a speed of 207.55 mph. Powered by a Napier Lion VIIA aero-engine rated at 925 horsepower which had been intended a seaplane meant to complete in the Schneider Trophy races, the car was one of the first streamlined racers with a pointed nose and tight cowling. It had an aluminum body and had ice chests built into its sides through which its coolant flowed. A particularly novel feature was a telescopic sight mounted along the cowl's centerline for Seagrave to use to keep the car from rubbing diagonally. This has been duplicated on the model.

Seagrave arrived at Daytona Beach in early March 1929 and after a single practice run he succeeded in setting the new LSR of 231.45 mph on March 11 in front of a crowd of some 120,000 spectators, easily beating Keech's record from year before. Keech had driven a car known as the White Triplex or the Triplex Special which was powered by three coupled war-surplus Liberty L-12 V12 aero-engines claimed to have a combined 1,500 horsepower but it had an older-style body that lacked the streamlining of the Golden Arrow.

Upon Seagrave's recapturing the LSR for England, an attempt was made with the Triplex at Ormond Beach, Florida on March 13 to win the record back for the United States.  Keech was asked to drive the car again in this attempt at the record but declined so Lee Bible drove it. At the end of the second pass, when its speed was well below the record set by the Golden Arrow, the Triplex ran off the track and onto the sand dunes beyoud where it rolled over. Bible was thrown from the car and killed instantly upon impacting the ground. A Pathe Newsreel Cinema cameraman was also killed in the accident.

Bible's death led Seagrave to quit speed racing briefly, only to be killed attempting a water speed record the following year. The Golden Arrow never raced again after setting the LSR and was transported back to England after this feat where it is now displayed at UK's National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire. The crate which was made to carry the car from the US is replicated by the cardboard box in which the model comes, as can be seen in our third and fourth pictures.

Note that while the labeling on the model's base gives the Golden Arrow's LSR as 231.44 mph, the sources for the above infromation about Seagrave and his car and both Keech and Bible and thier Triplex Special give the figure as 231.45 mph.

FOR ANYONE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HOW TO INTERPRET A MODEL'S SCALE, THE MODEL IS 7 1/4 INCHES LONG AND THE BOX, WHICH IS MEANT TO REPLICATED THE SHIPPING CRATE FOR RETURNING THE CAR TO ENGLAND FROM THE US, IS 10 3/8 INCHES LONG. THESE ARE EQUIVALENT TO DIVIDING THE RESPECTIVE LENGTHS OF THE REAL VEHICLE AND ITS SHIPPING CRATE IN INCHES BY 43.
