Forty seven locomotives of this type were built and numbered from UP 6900 to UP 6946. This class of locomotive was named Centennial by the Union Pacific because it was delivered during Union Pacific’s centennial celebration of the driving of the golden spike that completed the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah.
