The
reverse design featuring a salmon was by English artist Percy Metcalfe. The obverse featured the Irish harp. From
1928 to 1937 the date was split either side of the harp with the
name Saorstat Eireann circling around. From 1938 to 1968 the
inscription changed to Eire on the left of the harp and the date on
the right. The fishing
industry was (and is) very important to the Irish economy. The salmon
represents both the sea fisheries and the freshwater game fishing.
The florin was first struck in 1928 in .750silver. The final silver issue was in 1943. The 1951 issue was the first in cupro nickel. The decision to issue change the coin's metal content to cupro nickel was made before the 1943 coins were issued. So the 1943 coins and some of the 1942 coins were returned to the mint for melting. However, a very small number of the 1943 halfcrowns and an even smaller number of the 1943 florins made it into circulation. A huge number of pre 1944 Irish Silver Coins were melted down for their silver content making the 1930 florin much scarcer than its low mintage of 330,000 suggests.
