An all original 1920s Parisienne green silk piano scarf or shawl with a beautiful, hand embroidered floral design and long, hand knotted ecru fringe all around. The embroidery is done with silk thread in the same color, but the silk embroidery thread is much glossier than the background silk and so the designs stands out well and look darker than the background. The color of the piano scarf is very soft lime green, with slightly darker embroidery, RGB 789672. There is a photo with a quarter next to the floral pattern to show scale. The floral pattern continues in repeats all over the scarf, except for around the edge which is plain silk. All around the edge, on all four sides, is long, hand knotted silk fringe in a lovely complementary ecru color. The size of this large piano scarf is 49" x 51" with an additional 17" of fringe on all sides, and it displays well as a wrap when folded in half diagonally as shown on my model. There are no major condition issues with the piano scarf, but this is a vintage scarf that is at least 85 years old and so it is reasonable to expect some minor signs of age related wear. The silk is strong and soft, with no signs of shattering or splitting. The embroidery is lovely, and there are very few loose threads. There are some tiny, pale organic spots scattered around the piano shawl (examples shown in photo), and there are some variations in the color of the background, probably caused by the dying process, with the largest area about the size of the an orange, near the center of the piano shawl (shown). I have tried to show this in the photos, but the differences are not that striking and so it is not that easy to see, but I mention it for accuracy. There are some shorter threads on the fringe, and a minor amount of broken fringe, but the fringe is by and large in pretty good shape considering its age. There do not appear to be any holes or tears in the piano scarf, and the scarf looks and smells clean, although I did not launder it. There may be other minor signs of age related wear that I did not notice or record. This is NOT a reproduction, this is an all original 1920s pale green, silk embroidered piano shawl with lovely, long ecru fringe. The piano scarf was collected in Paris, France, more than 25 years ago and has been carefully stored ever since. It probably originated in China, as this type of embroidered Mandarin piano scarf was very popular in the 1920s when China opened up to the West and chinoiserie was all the rage, but there is no tag on the scarf and so there cannot be 100% certainly about where it was made. Please be aware that vintage clothing is neither new nor perfect. In many cases, vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items. Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear. But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item. Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
