Extremely Rare museum-quality Scottish Football medal named to John Wallace who was instrumental in founding Third Lanark Football Club in 1872, was the Club's goalkeeper and, according to my research was in the first ever team fielded by the Club. The front of the medal is engraved "3RD. L.R.V. F.C. 1876 - 77". The obverse is engraved "1st. Eleven John Wallace". (1st Eleven could indicate John was a member of the Club's first ever team or that he was a member of the Club's 1st Eleven in the season 1876 - 77).

Weight: 6.9 gm. Width: 21 mm. Height: 38 mm. Hall Mark: Due to its age the medal is not hallmarked but it tests for 9ct gold.

History of Third Lanark Football Club: The Club started as the football team of the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers (3RD L.R.V.) (see medal engraving), part of the Volunteer Force. Formally founded on 12 December 1872 at a meeting of the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers in the Regimental Orderly Room in Howard Street, Glasgow. Captain John Inglis was elected President and much of the initial organisation was down to John Wallace, goalkeeper, and Colonel John Bennie Wilson, striker, who was later to score Third Lanark's first ever League goal. The Club was a founder member of the Scottish Football League in 1890.

Third Lanark existed for 95 years between 1872 and 1967 in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1967 they were compulsorily liquidated and dissolved. The Club's demise was considered remarkable as it finished 3rd in Scotland's top division behind Rangers and Kilmarnock only 6 years before it folded.

Summary: As can be seen from the photos and history (above) this medal is part of Scottish football's early history and really should be in a museum. Good luck!
