Kasebier (1852-1934) was one of the most influential American photographers of the early 20th Century. She was known for her evocative images of motherhood, her powerful portraits of Native Americans and her promotion of photography as a career for women.

In the early part of the 20th Century, the figure and face of Evelyn Nesbit (1884-1967) was ubiquitous, appearing in mass circulation and magazine advertisements, on souvenir items and calendars, making her a cultural celebrity. Starting as a teenager, she posed for many of the respected artists of the era, including Charles Dana Gibson, who idealized her as a "Gibson Girl".
