Please note: The image(s) shown in this listing may not match the actual item for sale. Since we offer over 600 shows, we are using the picture of a couple other shows we offer such as X Minus One, Quiet Please, Richard Diamond, etc. for illustrative purposes. Each series has artwork unique to that show. We just want to show off our professional disc art.

Adventures Of Philip Marlowe
MP3 CD Set Of 3 Discs 103 Episodes

In old time radio, when you say hard boiled detective, the first thing that pops into your head is Philip Marlowe. Philip Marlowe is the character created by Raymond Chandler in his series of novels. The actual character was first introduced in the book 'The Big Sleep' in 1939. Although Philip Marlowe was hard drinking, fast acting, and didn't hesitate to resort to violence, he had a more civilized side that set him apart from the other pulp fiction detectives of this time. He enjoys chess, poetry, and doesn't resort to violence unless he has to, and well, he usually has to.

Chandler's Philip Marlowe character was a natural for old time radio. At the time that Philip Marlowe first hit the airwaves, this genre of old time radio was very popular. In 1947 CBS needed a summer replacement for Bob Hope. Pepsodent was the sponsor, and they wanted a quality show that would keep that time slot until Hope and company returned to their time slot. They got no less than movie star Van Heflin to play the role of Marlowe, and keep this time slot in old time radio theirs. Both CBS and Pepsodent spent a lot of money promoting Philip Marlowe.

They got more than they bargained for with Heflin though. He was already a screen star, but he took on this old time radio show like he was just staring his career. Before Philip Marlowe aired, he worked closely with the police to learn all the lingo and procedures. He was a master of the entertainment arts and a hard worker. The show was a huge success, and America loved the Philip Marlowe character on old time radio. But, this was only a summer replacement series, and MGM studios had much bigger things in store for Van Heflin than doing old time radio drama.

It then took another year for Philip Marlowe to hit the airwaves again. This time they got veteran old time radio actor Gerald Mohr to play Philip Marlowe. Mohr put his tattoo on the role. Old time radio fans loved him in the part, and within one year, Gerald Mohr was voted most popular radio actor in 'Radio and TV' magazine. The series now had legs, but as often happens on old time radio shows, it was here, then gone for a few months. Gerald Mohr was temporarily replaced by another veteran old time radio actor, William Conrad, who later went on to Gunsmoke fame.

Philip Marlowe, or more accurately the Adventures Of Philip Marlowe, had it's last run in 1951. It was one of Amerca's most popular shows, and had used 2 of old time radio's best actors in Mohr and Conrad, and one very famous movie star, Van Heflin

The episodes were all about 30 minutes long, and they all stayed true to Chandler's complicated character. Chandler was a hands off player when it came to the old time radio version, but he was very happy with Gerald Mohr playing the role. Most of the plots were typical Private Investigator stuff. Robbery, swindles, and murders filled up the half hour, along with the hard boiled action one came to expect from Philip Marlowe. He was tough as nails, but only when he needed. He loved women, but never let them get the best of him. But he used his violence judiciously.

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe is one of the top 3 or 4 hardboiled detective shows on old time radio. There were also a few movies made, and the books were good reads also. The Marlowe character was also used on TV, and at one point there was a video game with his name on it.

Not only is this a great old time radio detective series, but the audio quality is very good. Always a bonus for old time radio fans!

Probably the best version, and audio quality available, I (Eddie), am a big fan of this series, and have spent countless hours assembling this collection, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. There are 103 episodes available as a 3 disc MP3 CD set.

Every show or series we sell has artwork unique to the series, then the discs are printed using professional Primera Disc printers. The CDs or DVDs are coated with a printable surface, either Glossy or Fine Matte, printed fully from hub to edge. If we do use the Fine Matte, it is not like the ones you get at Staples, etc. They are Photo quality printable. Please be aware that some of the shows we offer are up to 80 years old. The technology used when originally recorded is not near today's standard. Eddies takes great pride in offering the finest quality episodes available for the show being offered. If there are any flaws in the recording, it is because of the source material.

Audio quality lies within the ears of the listener! What one person may feel is superior audio quality, another may feel is poor. Again, you can rest assured that there are no better overall audio quality episodes available for any show we offer. All of our shows are easy to listen to.

From time to time we may offer a show what is of very poor quality. If we do, it will be stated in the listing information area. These shows are only offered because of their historical signifigance. A good example is Jack Benny. A very popular show, but shows from his early career are not very good, however a diehard Jack Benny fan is happy with it.

On the other hand, we do offer some shows that are almost on par with today's broadcast quality. When we offer a show of this nature, it will also be pointed out in the item description.

With this in mind, we just want to emphasize two things:

1. There are no returns, based on show quality.

2. Eddies has the best quality shows available, period!

We have maintained an online store for many years with many satisfied customers, and have a reputation for the best in old time radio. During these years, and tens of thousands of discs sold, we have had only a handful of complaints about show quality. Most old time radio listeners realize that there will be flaws in the source material. Eddies Old Time Radio has a website on which there is a listing of every series in our inventory. Please stop by there if you wish.

Most of all, we are old time radio listeners ourselves, and look forward to making some new friends on eBay. If you have ANY questions, please feel free to contact us.

Enjoy the shows, and Best Regards,

Eddie
