I am very pleased to offer this late 18c or early 19c Chinese carved and pierced HongMu wood lid or cover for a large censor or incense burner. This great lid was produced in China from around c1770 to c1820 and was used on top of a large censor from time to time as there was much residue built up inside the cover from the smoke that escapes through the pierced sides. The lid is quite heavy and the wood stock used is nice and thick giving it good weight and has a bold heavy looking finial to the top standing on several built up levels of turnings giving this a splendid look with the main part being carved and pierced with ruyi head designs, vines, leaves and wonderful relief work where the designs are outlined just before ending into double relief outer rings. The wide uncarved band at the outside edge shows two cut out openings designed for the censor's handles to protrude through and the underside is smooth and well done and the only thing I did to this is just putting in some time in removing some of the built up smoke residue from the several centuries of incense burning but the top's outside I only gave a gentle clean and light buff with a cotton cloth and all the original patina and color came out so very well. Condition is excellent with really little wear considering the type of use it has had and there are a few short age splits and a few tiny chips here and there and are difficult to notice otherwise a brilliant early lid/cover. Sizes: Outer Diameter 10-1/2" x Outer Diameter of bottom ring 7-1/2" x Inside Diameter of Ring 7" x Height 4" A seldom found lid or cover of this early age and quality since lids designed for censors do not come up often so bid to win this one as you will not be disappointed!
