The Buffalo Nickel was minted from 1913 to 1938. As an interesting note the animal featured on the obverse of this coin is actually a bison and not a buffalo, so the true name of the coin is the Five Cent Indian Head although the name Buffalo Nickel is the mostly widely used and recognized term for it.
The Buffalo Nickel is one of America's most distinctive coins ever minted. It is considered by many as a work of art with its dominating Great Plains images - the American Indian on its obverse and the Bison on the reverse. Because of its great beauty the Buffalo Nickel has become a particular favorite with coin collectors.
James Earle Fraser, the Indian Head Nickel's designer, had this to say about the nickel, "I felt I wanted to do something totally America--a coin that could not be mistaken for any other country's coin. It occurred to me that the buffalo, as part of our western background, was 100% American, and that our North American Indian fitted into the picture perfectly."
Buffalo nickels have perhaps been the most popular obsolete U.S. coins ever to be collected. Many budding numismatists started with "Buffalos" as youngsters. Today, young and old alike will appreciate these vintage and scarce coins.
