This is a vintage Novar Anastigmat 13.5cm/135mm f/4.5 Lens in remarkable usable condition. Mounted in a Compur Rapid Shutter, the glass is smooth and clear with some signs of surface oxidation. The self-cocking tri-blade Compur shutter appears to be accurately timed and functions well. The diaphragm operates smoothly. Cosmetically it appears to be lightly used as the gloss black paint of the shutter is relatively unmarked for it’s vintage. A conundrum: the lens is plainly marked f/4.5 but the diaphragm adjustment is marked from f/1.5 to f/16! I’m not sure why…and don’t know what else to say about that. It is what it is.
Originally designed to be connected to a 9x12cm folding Zeiss Ikon or similar camera, it should cover up to 4x5 when stopped down sufficiently. This lens can be attached to the camera of your fancy, or perhaps even fantasy. Images and instructions for mounting vintage lens and shutter combinations on contemporary DSLR cameras are available on the internet. Images shot with the resulting marriage run the gamut from beautifully soft to incredibly sharp and everything in between. If you’re the industrious, engineering, or tinkering type this may be the lens to give you the “look” you’ve been searching for…
