CONTENTS: This is a mammoth collection of approx. 259 rare and original part-works, in string-bound wraps, covering a wide variety of oriental works (in mainly Sanskrit, but a few in English, notably 'The Tabakat-i-Nasiri of Minhaj-i-Saraj' and a couple of others). We estimate the total number of pages to be in the region of 22,000.

The volumes were printed at a number of Indian presses, mainly in Calcutta, including Baptist Mission, Bishops' College, Ganesa, The New Sanskrit and Girica-Vidyaratna. A handful were printed in London (by Gilbert & Rivington and a couple of others).

The Asiatic Society was founded by Sir William Jones in 1784 in Calcutta to enhance and further the cause of Oriental research. At the time of its foundation, this Society was named as "Asiatick Society". In 1832 the name was changed to "The Asiatic Society of Bengal" and again in 1936 it was renamed as "The Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal." The Society is housed in a building at Park Street in Kolkata (Calcutta). In 1848, the society started publishing Oriental works - including the Upanishads - in parts under the running title Bibliotheca Indica. Each title - some of which spanned dozens of parts over many years - was edited by a competent scholar aided by a staff of pundits. Dr. E. Roer was appointed as chief editor. Almost 325 titles (made up of many hundreds of parts) have been published under the series. The society's web site can be found here: http://www.asiaticsocietycal.com/publications/index.htm
